Our 66 Coburg's clients came to us with a clear vision: to transform their existing home into a light-filled, modern family space that could evolve with them over time. With a young daughter, plans for future children, and regular support from family, it was essential that the design balanced functionality, comfort, and long-term flexibility.

From the outset, the design teams goal was to reimagine the home while preserving its original character. The front portion of the house—complete with its fireplace, timber flooring, and high ceilings—held strong sentimental and architectural value. Rather than replacing it, the design carefully enhances these features, blending old and new through updated windows, built-in storage, and refined finishes. 

​

The rear of the home is where the transformation truly unfolds. Previously dark and disconnected, this space has been opened up to create a bright, airy living environment. The new open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area forms the heart of the home, complete with an island bench designed for both everyday living and entertaining. Large openings maximise natural light and provide full visibility to the backyard—an essential feature for young family life.

Practicality was a key driver throughout the design. A second bathroom has been introduced, while the existing bathroom has been modernised to meet contemporary standards. The former living room has been reconfigured into a fourth bedroom and flexible study space, offering a comfortable retreat for visiting family members and a functional work-from-home environment. 

Outdoors, the focus was on creating an inviting entertaining area that enhances the home without overpowering it. The new design replaces the existing structures that previously blocked light, allowing for a more seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The backyard has been softened with planting along the boundary, introducing greenery and privacy while reducing the visual impact of hard surfaces.

This project is a considered balance of preservation and progress—retaining the charm of the original home while delivering a modern, functional layout designed for family living. It reflects how thoughtful design can revitalise a space, improve everyday comfort, and create a home that adapts effortlessly over time.
