Open-plan living with new kitchen, bathroom, laundry, walk-in pantry added with full home renovation
Our 15 West Footscray clients engaged BCT Group to design an extension that would better support their growing family while enhancing the functionality, comfort and long-term sustainability of their home. With two adults working extensively from home and two young children, the existing house no longer provides the living space, flexibility, or amenities required for modern family life.
The brief focused on expanding the home's living areas while retaining its character and ensuring the design remained practical, durable, and efficient. Key objectives included creating a larger open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone, a dedicated home office that could also function as a guest bedroom, an additional bathroom, and improved storage solutions throughout the home
At the center of the design is a spacious open-plan living area that strengthens the connection between indoors and outdoors. Large, glazed openings provide access to a deck and backyard, allowing natural light to fill the home while creating a comfortable setting for entertaining and everyday family living. The kitchen has been carefully planned around a generous island bench, walk-in pantry and highly functional layout tailored to the clients' preference for practical, uncluttered spaces.
The design also responds to the clients' desire for a simple, contemporary aesthetic. Building upon the character of the existing home, the extension incorporates durable, low-maintenance materials and timeless finishes that feel modern without being overly elaborate. Functionality, longevity, and ease of maintenance have guided every design decision.
Beyond the new living spaces, the project considers a range of sustainability upgrades, including improved insulation, double glazing, all-electric living, future solar and battery readiness, EV charging capability, and energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions.
The result is a highly functional family home that balances practicality, comfort and sustainability. Through thoughtful planning and a clear understanding of our clients' lifestyle, we have created a flexible and future-focused design that will adapt to their needs for many years to come.
